Introduction
Who owns the Constitution?
"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. . . . Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
Who said that?
Nifty thing about the Current Constitutional Applications Project casebook, is that you may help write it. The American Constitution defines the structure, the backbone of the law, but competing interests are always fighting over what it means, making it a dynamic and living document.
The writers of the United States Constitution were educated in
the Bible. Government is depicted in many ways in Holy Scripture. Protector, as in the case of
the apostle Paul, as well as persecutor. Think execution of Jesus Christ by the occupying Roman Government.
Our brother Paul, who was both protected and persecuted, and tradition has it, eventually terminated by the Roman Government, wrote in the book of Romans that governments were appointed by Almighty God to act as Hiss servant, to provides services to mankind, chief among which is law and order for the protection and benefit of citizens, and to which all subjects owed respectful obedience, derivative of their respect for and obedience to their Creator.
Governments are also depicted as hideous, vicious animals that crushed and gnawed bones, and drank blood. Think 3rd Reich.
The Bill of Rights was to designed to protect the citizen from the Beast, and to keep it a servant. The fear you see in the folks' eyes in Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" is authentic, but the American citizen is increasingly buying and keeping guns not to protect his family from his fellow citizens. Au contraire, mon frère, a growing terror is of the American government itself. Mc Veigh intimated that he blew up the Oklahoma federal building in retaliation for the Waco massacre.
Before beginning the Current Constitutional Applications Project, I felt like, "Hey, how could the [tennis pro's] Williams sisters' mom be a real Christian, if she has a ring in her nose?"
My Gen-X nephew Lucas said that he would trust someone with a ring in her nose before he would trust a guy with a badge. That assessment was startling to me.
I've taught college level American Government, and American History for Senatobia Jr. High, and served graduate internships as both a police officer and youth court counselor. I did a Special Problems graduate sociology case study on the Mississippi State Penitentiary.
From a practice of law, watching the prominent endodontist, the award winning judge who lectures the Mississippi Legislature, and the Holly Grove Baptist Church deacon perjure themselves, and law enforcement, state and federal, commit heinous dishonesty and witness retaliation, I have gained a new perspective, for which I am grateful. It is different from the other side of the desk.
It is prayed that the Current Constitutional Applications Project will promote protection of Constitutional safeguards to all American citizens' rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, by contributing to
- A heightened awareness by the Peace Officer of her/his obligation to protect the reputation of his/her agency, by having the courage to rat out the mean or crooked ones.
- A heightened awareness on the part of the trial judge of his/her obligation to abide by the laws that she/he is sworn to uphold .
- A heightened awareness by American citizens of what liberty means, and what individual citizens can do to reflect the sentiment expressed by the first [and unanimously elected] president of the new United States of America, George Washington, that America would be blest and free to the extent that the American citizenry afforded freedom of conscience and worship, and extended love and charity to their fellow man. That every citizen owes not only kindness and love to his neighbors of different origins and beliefs, but a willingness to defend the rights of his fellow citizens to be different.
Am I the only person in America who sees the huge banners everywhere and thinks "Sound of Music"?
I am not a social reformer, but one of those poor deluded souls that prays the Our Father prayer everyday, awaiting and even now experiencing the effects of the perfect government where the Christ is King, and there is truly Joy to the World and Peace on Earth. Only Jehovah can change the weather. Until that time, all persons of conscience have an obligation to contribute meaningfully to the society in which they live, by living as we were designed to, contributing unique and individual strengths and resources to the assistance of those less fortunate.
The most useful thing a Christian can do is live like Jesus did, and teach what he wants taught. To be able to do that in one's work, to get to 'sing with the angels', is a very great privilege.
In an age where increasingly flags are used to cover cruel inhumanity, the words of Katherine Lee Bates serve as a reminder of what is beautiful and worth preserving, not only in America, but in all the world, in every neighborhood, in every family.
O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern
impassion'd stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in
self-control
Thy liberty in law.
God only mends flaws of those who admit they have some, and want help.
