Mississippi From the Inside Out
What one must understand about Mississippi, is that Mississippi is a little bitty town.
A pretty little town, but a little bitty town nonetheless.
When I moved to the pre-civil rights South in 1961, the population of Mississippi was three million folks. Forty years later, it has three million folks.
It is only three hours across and five hours from top to bottom.
I probably went out with maybe 10 guys in my whole life, all but one of them in Mississippi, and yet I’ve been out with the Athletic Director for Ole Miss, the first Mississippian to sign to professional baseball as a first round draft pick out of high school, and married the captain of Mississippi State’s football team. Greg Harkins and I spit watermelon seeds at one another in college. My high school graduation party was held on former governor William Winter ’s farm, my husband bought the dental office of Don Newcomb, who founded the Mc Allister’s Deli chain, Byron De Lay Beckwith came by the ranch selling something. It's hard not to know lots of folks.
Half of Mississippi is pink, the other half brown. Mississippi’s growth rate is explained in no small part by the fact that soon Brown Mississippians will be the majority of the electorate. The Brownies left for lack of opportunity, the Pinks are afraid to move in great numbers to a state that will soon be New Africa.
Mississippi is a lovely place, greatly blessed with lush natural beauty and mannerly people. The old stereotypes about bigotry and meanness, are just that, stereotypes. Caricatures. Whatever.
