 Who Are We?

Editor’s note: Some names have been changed. Part of letter was omitted, to not sound too slathering. The parents can be real jerks, just like you, dear reader. In a letter published to the New York parents and others, prior to being given to the Natchez, Mississippi Department of Humane Services caseworkers Ginger Johnson and Ashley Junkin, and to CASA worker Manfred Eidt, whom the Mississippi Court appointed as Eli's Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) or "Next Friend",

Brenda Smith of Mount Vernon, New York, who works for Goldman Sachs, wrote concerning Eli's parents....

“ …I would like to provide you with additional information regarding the environment in which Eli and his siblings have been reared. Through many years of friendship with the Chitrikar family, I have observed first-hand the warm, loving, and nurturing atmosphere Samir and Keller Chitrikar  have provided for their children….Samir and Keller worked hard to provide a beautiful home for their children. Not only was their house and property physically beautiful, the true beauty stemmed from their warm family life.

The only times my visits to the Chitrikar home felt strained or uncomfortable were when Mr. Johnson, Keller’s father, was visiting. On each occasion that our visits coincided, Mr. Johnson would be either the influence of alcohol or rude, hostile, and belligerent, usually a combination of all of the above, creating an atmosphere of extreme discomfort for everyone…

I can unequivocally state that I have observed Samir and Keller’s conduct for twenty years and I have never met any two parents who have shown more love and concern for the welfare of their children… They have always strived to give their very best to their children and to instill in them a sense of responsibility and respect…The conduct Eli and two of his older brothers are engaged in is certainly not something that was taught to them by their parents…

Regardless of their current conduct, these children were taught, by their parents, to have respect for authority, respect for other people and the property of others, and to be honest, hardworking individuals…. Not only am I appalled by the actions of Eli and his brothers, I am deeply saddened as well, for if anyone deserves love and respect from their children, it would be these parents, who have not only loved their children, but have loved being parents….Until recently, Eli and his two brothers’ behavior mirrored their good upbringing…

Dear Ms. Causey:

I am writing this letter in reference to the Chitrikar family.  I have known them for the last seventeen years and have found them to be loving and caring people.  It was after the home schooling of the children that I got to work with the three oldest children as their counselor.  It was no doubt in my mind that the children were ready for middle school, for when we gave the achievement tests, they were on target with the rest of the children their age level.  Therefore, they were placed with their chronological grade level.

During that year, Ethan, the eldest, was 8th grade and won Woodmen of the World Award.  This award was given to the person who had the highest score on the history test.  The next year, Isaiah, the second son, only missed receiving the same award by one point.  All three children seemed to have been well-adjusted socially and intellectually.  Micah, the third child, was an average student and a real boy.

As we followed the two oldest boys through high school, they received many academic honors.  Ethan received the Construction TECH 1 Award, and he and Isaiah both were placed in the top 10 in the national Spanish Exam for 3rd-year Spanish.  Isaiah received honors in French as well.

As Jehovah’s Witnesses, they did not appear to be deprived of what was needed to be well-adjusted children.  Their travels during the summer included visits to Portugal, Spain, Belize, and France.  Their religion exposed them to many cultures and people from all around the world.  In my opinion their religion made them socially, emotionally, and morally sound.  Their family was well spoken of in our community as well as respected.

                                                                                               Sincerely,

                                                                                                Selma J. Green
