Aunt Leona manages? the restaurant at the Comfort Suites in Vidalia, Louisiana. I think she used to own the fish place on the River. (There is only one River). If you go to Natchez, it is the niftiest place to stay. Anyhoo, my husband's cousin works in the restaurant with Miss Leona, and is a wealth of North Louisiana entertainment and education. (Both. Though I have never actually seen Miss Leona, I believe she exists.)
I tried to talk the cousin into being on Tia, because she is the intelligence, grit, and humor of the American south, but she declined. But she did share a valuable Miss Leona-ism. North Louisiana turns out some of the genuinely nicest and gracious children in America, so listen up!
When the cousin, 2nd, worked on the Riverboat with Miss Leona, Miss Leona let Mona know she was slipping, raising her kids. If one talked back or was balky about doing chores, you gave them a tub to scrub. Miss Leona urged Mona to stand her ground.
I've tried it, and it works! All I have to say to Sascha is "Miss Leona!", and she knows that means, "You can act a nitdon, but there are consequences, girl, so quit making it hard on yourself", without anyone getting all bent out of pretzel. Calm, kindly, consequences.
Of course, one must remember that those rules only apply where the general consensus is that it is useful to have a mom and dad that love you and teach you decency. The traditional Chinese farewell to young children was "Mind your mother!", comparable to the Northern Louisiana, "You be good!"
Tia-thisisamerica is about the sort of help that family members and dear friends pass on to one another. Support, as Sochi* says, "A push."
*Tia Sochi is the lady at the Hair Company in Jourdanton, Texas, that will wax your chin for $15, whole head for $25. She is from Mazatlan, and is married to a bee owner. Yes, entomologist, and has a brother in law that is head of Sprint in Korea? Very interesting, and nice. Tell her Tia-thisisamerica sent you and she'll give you a discount! Plus book Mary for a massage, 1 1/2 hours. Aaaaaaaahhhhh! And the spa pedicure will cure you.... that's why it's called a pedi=cure. It kills the lice in your life. Really.
